There are two separate risks to manage. The first is a direct or nearby lightning strike, which can travel along the mast, mount and cabling. The second is power-line surges and static discharge, which enter through the power supply and Ethernet path. A complete protection plan bonds the metal mast to your home's grounding system and places a surge protector on the line between the dish and the router and on the AC power feed.
Connect a copper bonding wire (at least 10 AWG, ideally 6 AWG) from the metal mast or mount to your home's main ground rod or grounding electrode. Use a listed grounding clamp and keep the wire as short and straight as possible — every bend adds resistance. If you are using a non-metallic mount, run a separate ground wire along the dish cable path so the dish itself is bonded. Check your local electrical code, which may require this bond regardless of the mount type. If you are unsure where your main ground electrode is, look near the electrical meter or panel — most homes have a rod driven there. When in doubt, have a licensed electrician verify the bond and confirm the connection is tight and corrosion-free.
Place an outdoor-rated Ethernet surge protector inline between the dish cable and the router, and ground that protector to the same electrode as the mast. On the AC side, plug the Starlink power supply into a quality surge protector or a whole-home surge device at the panel. Remember that a basic power strip is not the same as a true surge protector — look for a joule rating and a clamping voltage suitable for your region.
Replace surge protectors after any major event, since a protector that has absorbed a large surge may continue to pass power while no longer clamping voltage. Checking the status light and swapping the unit every few years is cheap insurance for the rest of the network.
If a severe electrical storm is forecast, the simplest and most effective step is to unplug the dish and router from power and disconnect the cable. Physical disconnection creates an air gap that no surge protector can match. Make it part of your routine if you live in a lightning-prone area, and re-check all bonds and connections at the start of each storm season.
After the storm passes, reconnect the system and verify everything comes back online cleanly. If a surge got through, inspect the cable ends and connectors for scorching or deformation before trusting the setup again.
