A ballast mount sits on the roof and is held down by cinder blocks, pavers or sandbags placed on its tray. Because it requires no drilling, it will not compromise a waterproofing membrane or void a roofing warranty. A penetrating mount bolts through the roof deck and is stronger in extreme weather, but every hole is a potential leak point. For the vast majority of residential installs, ballast is the safer and simpler choice.

Walk the roof and look for the spot with the widest unobstructed view of the sky in the direction the Starlink app indicates. Avoid placing the dish behind chimneys, vents, HVAC units or tall parapet walls. Use the obstruction tool in the Starlink app before you commit — moving a weighted mount is easy, but getting it right the first time saves a second trip up the ladder.
Before placing the mount, check that the roof surface is sound and clear of standing water, loose gravel or debris. A clean, flat contact area helps the rubber mat grip and stops the mount from slowly creeping in high winds.
Lay a rubber mat or EPDM pad down first so the mount does not abrade the roof surface. Assemble the mount tray according to the instructions, then place your weights evenly across the base so the load is balanced. Slide the dish mast into the mount and lock it in place. Confirm the mount cannot rock or shift by pushing firmly on the mast from several directions.
Run the cable from the dish down to your entry point using the shortest protected path. Keep the bend radius generous — at least 5-8 cm (2-3 inches) at any turn — and clip the cable every 30-45 cm so it cannot flap in the wind. Where the cable passes into the building, use a cable entry plate or grommet and seal it fully with outdoor silicone. Leave a drip loop just outside the wall.
Power up the dish and open the Starlink app. Confirm the dish is aligned and the signal quality is strong, then check for any error messages related to the cable or motors. Finally, walk the whole route once more to make sure there are no kinks, pinch points or loose clips before you climb down.
If the app reports marginal obstruction, nudge the dish or the mount slightly and re-check — small adjustments on a flat roof are quick and often make a large difference to reliability.
