Whether you are installing a dish on a rooftop, a wall mount or a pole, getting the cable from outside to your router is one of the most common challenges. A clean, protected cable route prevents damage, signal issues and water intrusion — and it makes future maintenance much easier.

Why Cable Routing Matters for Starlink Installations

Tools You Will Need

Power drill with a hole saw or spade bit (large enough for the cable connector, typically 12-19 mm / 0.5-0.75 inch)
Rubber grommet or cable entry plate
Outdoor-rated silicone sealant
Cable clips and conduit (optional but recommended)
Fish tape or a stiff wire for pulling the cable

Step 1: Plan the Route

Measure the distance between the dish location and the router. Keep the run as short and straight as possible. Avoid areas with sharp edges, heat sources or places where the cable could be stepped on or pinched.

Step 2: Drill the Entry Hole

Drill from inside to outside at a slight downward angle so water runs away from the wall. The hole must be large enough for the connector — forcing a connector through a tight hole is the number one cause of cable damage.

Step 3: Protect the Cable

Starlink cable should never be bent sharply. Keep the bend radius generous — a good rule of thumb is at least 5-8 cm (2-3 inches) at any turn. Use grommets where the cable passes through metal or masonry, and conduit for long exposed runs.

Step 4: Seal the Exterior

Apply outdoor silicone sealant around the entry plate or grommet. Let it cure fully before testing. A drip loop just outside the wall stops water from following the cable inside.

Step 5: Test Everything

After routing, check the connection in the Starlink app and verify signal quality. Walk around the cable run once more to confirm there are no kinks or tension points.
