A Starlink mount is only as reliable as the fasteners holding it to your home. Most mount failures are not caused by the bracket — they come from screws driven too loose, too tight or into the wrong material. The solution is a methodical install: the right tools, the correct torque and a safety checklist that protects both you and the structure you are working on.

Tools You Will Need

Cordless drill or impact driver with a full bit set
Torque wrench (or a driver with a calibrated clutch)
Stud finder or rafter locator for wall and roof work
Socket set and open-end wrenches for bracket bolts
Roofing sealant, flashing and a spirit level
Fall-protection gear if you are working at height

Torque Settings That Matter

Over-tightening is the most common mistake. A lag screw driven too hard strips the wood and loses most of its grip, while an under-tightened bolt lets the mount vibrate loose. As a rule, seat roof lags to roughly 10-14 Nm (7-10 ft-lb) into solid decking or rafters — firm enough to hold, never hard enough to spin. For bracket-to-pole bolts, snug to about 8-10 Nm (6-7 ft-lb) and re-check after the first storm. Always follow the torque printed on your specific bracket, and re-torque after a month of exposure.

Anchor Into Structure, Not Just Siding

Every fastener must bite into a rafter, stud or solid masonry — never into sheathing or siding alone. Use a stud finder to locate framing before you drill, and pre-drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screw's shank. For masonry walls, use expanding anchors or epoxy-set bolts rather than plastic plugs, which crack and pull out under wind load.

Safety on Roofs and Ladders

Work on a dry, calm day and never on a wet or icy surface. Use a harness tied to a solid anchor when working on a pitched roof, and keep ladders on level ground with someone footing them. Route all power tools carefully so cords never cross your climbing path, and keep one hand on the ladder at all times when carrying hardware up or down.

Seal Every Penetration

After the mount is torqued and level, seal every hole with outdoor roofing sealant and install flashing under the shingle course above the bracket. A generous bead around each lag head stops water from following the screw into the deck. Check the mount six months later — re-torque anything that has loosened and refresh sealant that has cracked in the sun.
