The first decision is the surface. A standard pivot mount with lag screws works well on a pitched asphalt shingle roof because the screws seat into the plywood deck below. Clay or concrete tile needs a tile-friendly mount that bridges the tile course and anchors into the structure without cracking brittle tiles. Metal roofs call for a seam clamp or a bracket that fastens to the ribs rather than drilling through the panel. Flat roofs are the easiest case — a weighted non-penetrating mount or a tripod keeps water out of the equation entirely.
On a pitched shingle roof, look for a mount with a wide base and a weatherproof flashing that tucks under the shingle course above the fastener. Seal every penetration with roofing sealant and keep the dish high enough to clear the ridge and any chimney. For tile, avoid drilling through the tile itself. Choose a bracket that lifts over the tile profile and bolts into a rafter, then replace any cracked tile before you finish.
Metal roofs are the most sensitive to penetrations. A non-penetrating seam clamp grips the standing seam without a single hole, which preserves both the warranty and the waterproofing. Flat roofs are forgiving: a ballasted mount held down by concrete blocks lets you reposition the dish without tools, and a short tripod keeps the dish level while snow or standing water drains around it.
If your roof is steep, fragile or heavily shaded, a wall mount or a pole mount is often the better answer. A wall mount bolts to a gable end or a sturdy fascia and holds the dish well away from the roof surface. A pole mount set in concrete gives you the flexibility to place the dish exactly where the sky is clearest — and it keeps all roof penetrations at zero.

Walk the property, test a few candidate spots and confirm the dish will clear trees, eaves and neighbouring structures.
