Starlink Antenna Placement for Industrial Facilities: Avoiding Signal Interference

Starlink's biggest enemy is not distance — it is anything between the dish and the sky. Unlike a geostationary satellite dish that locks onto one fixed point, a Starlink antenna tracks a constantly moving constellation across a wide field of view, so a clean, unobstructed sky in nearly every direction is essential. At an industrial facility that is harder than it sounds: cranes, stacks, tanks, overhead conveyors and neighbouring buildings all carve into the sky view and cause dropouts. Get the placement right and the link is rock solid; get it wrong and no amount of bandwidth will help. This guide explains how to pick the right spot and keep interference at bay.

Why Placement Determines Performance

Clearing Obstructions

Start by surveying every candidate location with the Starlink app's obstruction tool, which shows you exactly which parts of the sky are blocked. Remember that the dish's view is far wider than you expect, so a structure off to one side can still matter. Mount the dish high and central, away from the edges of rooflines and clear of anything that moves — an overhead crane or a rotating stack can swing into the signal path unpredictably. When the ideal spot is not obvious, a mast or tower mount is almost always the answer, lifting the dish above the surrounding clutter.

Avoiding RF Interference

Starlink operates in the Ku and Ka bands, and while it is reasonably tolerant of everyday RF noise, nearby high-power transmitters can still cause problems. Keep the dish well away from radar installations, powerful point-to-point microwave links and large antenna arrays, and do not mount it directly in front of or immediately beside them. The same goes for the router and cable side of the system — route data cables away from heavy motor drives and welding equipment that generate broadband electrical noise, and use shielded cable where the run passes through electrically noisy areas.

Vibration and Physical Isolation

Industrial facilities vibrate, and a dish mounted to a shaking structure will constantly be fighting to maintain its link. Avoid attaching the antenna directly to vibrating machinery, ductwork or lightly braced steel that resonates with fans and compressors.

Mount to a solid, independently braced structure wherever possible
Use isolation mounts to dampen transmitted vibration
Check fasteners regularly — vibration loosens them over time
Keep the dish clear of exhaust stacks that blast heat and soot

Our mounting solutions include rigid, vibration-resistant options built for industrial conditions.

Verifying Your Signal

After mounting, run the dish for a full working day and watch the app's statistics. A healthy install shows minimal obstruction events and steady uptime, while repeated brief dropouts usually point to an obstruction or an intermittent RF source you have not yet spotted. Re-test at different times of day and during different site operations, since machinery that is idle in the morning may be active and interfering by the afternoon. Adjust the location or add height until the link holds steady through the busiest part of the shift.
