Power over Ethernet, or PoE, is the reason a single cable can run from your Starlink dish to your router while carrying both electricity and data at the same time. For anyone who has wrestled with a separate power brick and a mess of adapters, PoE is what makes a clean one-cable installation possible. Understanding how PoE works on your specific dish matters, because Starlink does not use standard IEEE 802.3af/at PoE on every model — and plugging the wrong injector into the wrong port can leave you with no power, no data or a damaged device.

What PoE Means for Starlink

PoE on the Standard Dish

The Standard dish has historically relied on a proprietary power supply that feeds power and data over the Starlink cable to the dish. On many generations this is a form of active PoE at a higher voltage than typical network gear, which means a generic 48V PoE switch will not drive it directly. Choose an injector rated at or above that voltage and current
Confirm the Ethernet pinout matches your Starlink cable or adapter
Prefer active injectors over passive ones for longer cable runs

Running Power and Data on One Cable

The whole appeal of PoE is a single clean run. Keep that run within the recommended length for your cable type, avoid sharp bends and use a quality shielded cable for outdoor sections. If your dish uses a proprietary connector, plan the route so the cable and any adapters stay protected from weather, and leave a service loop near the dish so you can reposition it later without re-running the whole line.

Common PoE Pitfalls

The most frequent mistakes are plugging a Standard dish into a generic PoE switch, using an under-rated injector and ignoring voltage drop over long runs. Each of these shows up as a dish that powers up but keeps rebooting, or a router that never negotiates a link. When in doubt, test the injector with a multimeter before connecting the dish, and keep the injector close to the router rather than the dish so the powered side stays indoors.
